Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween from Parrish Ranch! We started the day with some spooky fog in the orchards, but it’s now a beautiful sunny day. The ranch is open until five, and we still have pumpkins if you need a last-minute Jack-o-Lantern. We also have lots of interesting and unique sweets and treats, if you want to hand out something more exciting than average store-bought candy tonight.

We hope everyone has a fun and safe Halloween!

Saturday, October 23: Live Music, Wine, Honey and Apples

We’re looking at a sunny, song-filled Saturday. Live music fit for dancing will be flowing courtesy of L.P. 33, who will be playing on the patio from 11 – 3. Inside the barn, we’ve got a fresh batch of local honey in several varieties, like clover, sage, buckwheat, and avocado. We’ve also got a new shipment of wine in and lots of favorite flavors are back on the shelves. Up at the snack bar, there’s a full selection of New Zealand meat pies available, or a slice of apple crisp or apple pie if you’re looking for something sweeter. Pair that with a cup of cider and head on down to the picnic park to enjoy autumn on the mountain.
Apple varieties today are:
Red Delicious
Rome Beauty
Spartan
Vasquez
Winesap
Fuji
Arkansas Black
Live music on the patio from 11:00 – 3:00 PM
The wine shelves are full again!
Enjoy a lovely fall day in the picnic park.

Pesticide-Free Apples: Thursday 10-21-21 Update

Did you know that according to the Environmental Working Group, average grocery apples are one of the most pesticide-contaminated crops? Pesticides are sprayed directly onto both the leaves and the apples, and they are able to seep into the core of the apple through the bowl-shape at the top where the stem emerges. That’s why apples made it onto the “Dirty Dozen” list, which is the EWG’s list of crops they recommend buying the organic version of, as opposed to their “Clean Fifteen” that they say you can get away with buying non-organic, which includes pineapples and onions.

Here at Parrish, although we haven’t gone as far as getting certified for organic produce yet, we are pesticide-free. All of our apples are grown naturally, untouched by harsh chemicals. Eating an apple grown in our orchards is like picking an apple off the tree in Grandma’s back yard, and we think this is most noticeable with our Red Delicious variety. It’s common for store-bought Red Delicious apples to be only red, not so delicious, with a mealy texture. But our Red Delicious are truly tasty, and they have a crunchier texture.

As it’s Thursday, we’re open from 9 – 5 today, and our apples await you in the big red barn. We hope everyone has a wonderful Friday Eve!

Saturday, October 16 2021: Apple Update

Happy Saturday! We’ve got a beautiful day of sunshine and music ahead, with L.P. 33 returning to the patio to bring us live music and a high of 73 degrees.
We have an update on the apple lineup! The highly anticipated Arkansas Black apples have come in. These are a variety with very dark red skin and dense texture. They’re on the tart side, though still sweeter than Granny Smith, and because of the density, they’ll keep in your refrigerator quite a bit longer than average apples. These apples join Winesaps as our latest varieties, bringing the current list of apples to:
Red Delicious
Rome Beauty
Spartan
Fuji
Braeburn
Vasquez
Winesap
Arkansas Black
We’ve also got large and medium pumpkins for carving, tiny Pam pumpkins and Indian corn for decorating, jams, jellies, butters, sauces, and cider for fall meals, and lots of other gifts and goodies here at the ranch. We hope to see you soon!

October 9 Update: L.P. 33, Pumpkins, Apples, Corn and More

We made it to the weekend! The weather is feeling very autumnal, with lingering low clouds and a high of 58 degrees. We’re happy to have L.P. 33 back today, so the patio will be full of their lively songs for you to enjoy.
On the apple front, we now have 1/2 bushels of Granny Smith, Rome Beauty, and Red Delicious. You can also mix and match your own bag of Romes and Reds, or buy them individually.
The apple varieties on the shelves this weekend are:
Granny Smith
Red Delicious
Rome Beauty
Braeburn
Vasquez
Spartan
Gala
Fuji
And it wouldn’t be October without pumpkins, so we’re happy to let you know we have them available in several sizes, along with decorative corn both small and large.
Come on up and enjoy fall with us!
